Published by BBC Africa Eye in November 2024, “South Sudan’s Poisoned Floods” has captured the hearts of many viewers, drawing attention to the pressing climate issues faced by South Sudan.
The country has been at the forefront of climate change challenges, experiencing both floods and droughts that have affected various regions.
Reports from humanitarian organizations indicate that extreme floods have displaced at least 140,000 people over the past five years, particularly in the Bentiu camp where the documentary was filmed. The powerful narrative presented by Ajak sheds light on these urgent environmental issues.
Expressing her excitement upon receiving the news from JHR Kenya, Maura Ajak extended her gratitude to the BBC Africa Eye team for their support in producing the investigative piece. Ajak reflected on the journey of documenting the story, describing it as tough yet incredibly enriching.

“I am both honored and thankful for this recognition, as well as for our team at BBC Africa Eye. This journey has been an incredible learning experience, and I am eager to continue expanding my knowledge and skills,” said Ajak.
She adds that, “Together, we can strive to shed light on important issues and tell compelling stories that resonate. It’s a reminder that with every challenge comes an opportunity for growth, and I am excited for what lies ahead as we continue to make a difference.”
In December 2024, Maura Ajak was also honored with the “Climate Champion Human Rights Defender of the Year Award” by the South Sudan Human Rights Defenders Network (SSHRDN).
