Juba, 07th March 2025 – Today, the Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS) team, led by Josephine Achiro, Chairperson of the Executive Board, paid a courtesy visit to Parliament.
They held a meeting with Oliver Benjamin Mori, Chairperson of the Specialized Committee for Information in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) who is also the Spokesperson for the Parliament.
During the meeting, Josephine Achiro expressed her appreciation for the Parliament’s ongoing collaboration with the media.
She noted improvements in the media landscape and encouraged the continuation of this positive relationship.
However, Josephine also highlighted cases of harassment and intimidation of journalists by security agencies.
She said. “I appreciate the leadership of the Parliament for always collaborating with the media. I want to say the media landscape in the country has improved and we encourage this relationship to continue between the media and the parliament.”
Achiro presented the issue of the Media Development Institute (MDI) suspension, urging Parliament to find ways to operationalize MDI as AMDISS works to complete its registration requirements.
Chuol Jany, Secretary General of the AMDISS Executive Board, echoed concerns about the harassment of journalists by security agencies. He urged Parliament to protect journalists assigned to cover events in Parliament.
“Despite improvements in the media landscape, there is still constant harassment of journalists by security agencies on these [Parliament] premises,” he stated.
Oliver Benjamin Mori, Parliament Spokesperson, extended his appreciation to AMDISS for the visit and promised to present the issue of MDI to Parliamentarians after the recess period is over.
He expressed his intention to engage AMDISS in another meeting to further deliberate on the MDI registration status.
“I will present the issue of MDI to the Parliamentarians after the recess period and engage AMDISS in another meeting to deliberate the issues,” Mori said.
