The newly appointed South Sudan Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has pledged to support South Sudanese journalists in covering significant events in Ethiopia.
Lily Adhieu Martin Manyiel, who previously served as the Press Secretary in the Office of the President, expressed her commitment to facilitating opportunities for South Sudanese journalists during her tenure as Ambassador.
Ambassador Adhieu stated that she will work closely with major media advocacy organizations, such as AMDISS, to ensure that South Sudanese journalists are sent to Ethiopia for major events as they occur.
She emphasized that this initiative would provide valuable exposure for journalists, particularly female journalists, allowing them to report on significant events and become correspondents for international media.
“This is an important matter that I will consider,” Adhieu said. “We need to find ways to send our journalists to cover big events where they can gain exposure and become correspondents for major media organizations.”
She added, “Once I settle into my role at the Embassy, I can explore the possibility of having a focal person to coordinate this effort, ensuring that South Sudanese journalists can cover key events, such as elections or debates facilitated by the AU or IGAD.”
Ambassador Lily Adhieu further mentioned that if there are opportunities for internships or training, her Embassy would be eager to collaborate with media institutions to provide South Sudanese journalists with these experiences.
“If there are chances for internships or mentorships with prominent media organizations like CNN or Al Jazeera, my goal is to investigate those possibilities as an Ambassador. If such opportunities exist, the Embassy would be more than willing to work with AMDISS or other organizations to facilitate sending journalists there,” she added.
Lily Adhieu Martin Manyiel was appointed as Press Secretary in the Office of the President in September 2022. She was relieved of her duties in that role in February 2025, after which she was appointed as the new Ambassador to Ethiopia on the same date.
Ambassador Lily Adhieu is a lawyer by profession, holding two Bachelor’s degrees in political science and law, a Master’s degree in law, and she is currently pursuing a Ph.D.
