On Tuesday we wrapped up an incredible sessions under Women in News – WAN-IFRA – South Sudan Chapter with our 2025 Alums to be, during our last Leadership Hub III we had variety of topics that reflects the reality in our newsrooms.
Trainer Lasuba Memo: Newsroom Leadership
Effective newsroom leadership guides staff to align with the organization’s mission. Leadership (vision, ethics) differs from management (efficiency, processes).
A strategic newsroom integrates every story and process with the company’s mission, plans for crises, adopts technology, and diversifies content.
Challenges include poor leadership appointments, top-down interference, resource shortages, and communication gaps. Solutions involve leading from any position, prioritizing sustainable growth, embracing diversity, and driving individual development.
Trainer Irene Ayaa led two sessions
Part 1: The Power of Your Personal Brand
It was emphasized that our personal brand is our most valuable asset. Key points included:
You are a Brand:
Your name, reputation, and unique skills form your personal brand, requiring careful management.
The “Leadership Hub Three”
Success is built on Courage & Authenticity, Commitment & Diligence, and Owning Your Value.
Actionable Advice:
Participants were encouraged to identify and develop distinct skills, ensure unique contributions are recognized, and consistently maintain professional reputation through reliability and integrity.
Part 2: Navigating Sexual Harassment in the Workplace
Irene created a safe space to discuss sexual harassment in the media industry, defining it as unwanted, humiliating, or hostile sexual behavior determined by the recipient’s experience, often stemming from power abuse.
Underreporting is common due to fear and power imbalances. Solutions include collective action, clear policies, external reporting, and legal action.
The session empowered participants to proactively build professional identity and combat sexual harassment for a safer workplace.
Sheila Ponnie, 2025 Alums Mentor
Sheila led a peer mentoring session aimed at empowering women in media to forge a strong support network by drawing upon shared experiences.
The session began by including our collective journey in a single word, followed by guided small-group discussions on current challenges and valuable lessons learned.
There was also a collective reflection and a firm commitment to maintaining these connections, underscoring that significant personal and professional growth often stems from the collective wisdom and encouragement of our peers.
